Clear sound. Gentle practice. Meaningful possibilities. Listen, explore, relax, and be present.
What you’ll need
- An unweighted tuning fork.
- A soft mallet or activator.
- A comfortable place to sit and a few minutes of your time.
Unweighted vs. weighted: a quick comparison
Unweighted tuning forks have no added weights. They produce a clear, long-lasting tone and are used off the body for listening, meditation, and sensory exploration. They often have higher frequencies, such as 256 Hz and above.
Weighted tuning forks have added weights on the tines and a stronger physical vibration. They are used on the body for localized vibration and bodywork, and often have lower frequencies, such as 128 Hz, 64 Hz, and 32 Hz.
Common unweighted frequencies
Different frequencies create different listening experiences. Explore and notice what feels best for you. These are examples from the chart, rather than promises of a particular result.
- 256 Hz: a bright, clear tone, often used for focus, clarity, and meditation.
- 432 Hz: a warm, harmonious tone, popular for relaxation and mindful practice.
- 528 Hz: a rich, resonant tone, often used for meditation and sound exploration.
Ways to explore your practice
Use the sound as a focus for relaxation, attention, mindfulness, or meditation. This is a personal wellness practice: notice your own experience without trying to force a result.
Step 1: Hold correctly
Hold the tuning fork by the stem, not the tines. Keep a relaxed but secure grip.
Step 2: Activate
Gently strike the tines with a soft mallet or activator. Do not strike on hard surfaces.
Step 3: Listen
Hold the activated fork near your ear, a few inches away, at a comfortable distance and sound level. Listen to the tone as it rings and gradually fades.
Step 4: Explore around the body
Move the fork slowly around your body, keeping it a few inches away. Notice how the sound feels in different areas. You do not need to touch the body.
Step 5: Let it fade
Allow the tone to disappear naturally. Notice the silence that follows.
Step 6: Repeat and reflect
Repeat as desired. Take a few moments to notice how you feel.
Tips for the best experience
- Use a quiet space where you won’t be interrupted.
- Keep the fork a comfortable distance from your ear and body.
- Let the tone fade naturally. Don’t chase the sound.
- Try different frequencies and notice how they feel.
- Use it at the beginning or end of the day, or whenever you want a mindful pause.
- There’s no right or wrong way to experience the practice. Simply explore.
